The CCENT to CCNA Mentor Study Group by Darby Weaver

The CCENT to CCNA Mentor Study Group
 by Darby Weaver

Hi ladies and gentlemen,

I'm working with the members of the Choctaw Academy to obtain their own CCENT and into the CCNA as well as helping them to build a resume and LinkedIn profile. All of this works towards being a career building and enhancing experience.

Here's where they started today:

1. Create an email address if you don't have already. I usually recommend Gmail or else Yahoo bu there are others.

2. Create a LinkedIn Profile - This is for your professional career building relationships.  You will grow and nurture this account. While you can create many accounts, I recommend one and to make it a part of your own personal brand.  Your own contributions and become a part of your own personal branding.  This is how you sort of make money while you sleep - not literally - but over time in terms of months and years.  It does work.

3. I recommend you use some books or videos - I generally recommend Cisco Press and the Cisco Network Academy.  I'm also a heavily invested user of Udemy and the GNS Academy Authors.  You can use free resources and I'll never be the person to tell you not to downside each PDF by PDF of the command configuration guide for routing and those for a switch family.  Just go ahead and break down and do it and get it over with.  You won't regret it. Then print some and take them with you.  Kinda like drinking milk - it builds solid bones.

4. Safari - I love paper and I love my own books - I carry some with me everywhere.  However, You get a month free of Safari every time you buy a Cisco Press book and some companies offer subscriptions and with all the video learning - it just paid for itself in spades.

If that doesn't convince you create email addresses and use the free trial version - which is full featured what will?

5. Go to netacad.cisco.com and do whatever it takes to get registered and download Cisco Packet Tracer.  You are going to need it.  Even if you have real gear - download it anyway.  There are reasons and it's pretty kewl. So just go ahead and work witn me on this one. Thanks.

6.  Assignment one:

Find a Cisco Press Video Series by Kevin Wallace and take your time and watch it.

7. Find the Cisco Device For Password Recovery for the 2900 Series Router and the 3560/3750 Series switch.  Then learn how to perform a password recovery physically if you have gear and / or in Packet Tracer.

It'll be fun. Now you are not just a hacker but you can find work doing just this.  Never charge less that $1000.00 for this little treat of a skill.  I want you to practice this regularly and often.  I call this command and control.  It is a critical skill.  Learn it, know it, and love it.  Yes, there is always more to learn...

Ok.

I'm preparing a daily list of commands and a working topology that the Choctaw Academy is using as they work with me.

Promise it gets more interesting.

You can friend me on linkedin and I have a blog too if anyone is interested.  I'll keep the study program here as we progress.

As I see you have acquired the skills I'll help recommend you as we move along and you grow in your skills.

We are also going to work on resumes and LinkedIn profiles. The goal is to mentor this team on how to not only earn a certification but also to acquire skills that can be used productively to obtain excellent job opportunities.

Thanks to all and if you are interested take a moment and let me know.

There are no dumb questions and I for one will answer the same question a thousand times or more even for the same person until we get to where that light turns on.

Let's get started and let's have fun!
